On Cloudultra Features
Comfort and Fit
On is most well-known for its innovative technology incorporated into every shoe, and the Cloudultra is no different. Designed with the double-layer Helion™ superfoam and CloudTec® system, this versatile trail running shoe provides maximum comfort while remaining responsive across various tough terrains and surfaces including tarmac, concrete, buffed trails, rocky terrain, fire roads, and gravel surfaces. Its sock-like upper delivers a snug fit and like other On shoes, fits true to size. The new FlipRelease system also allows runners to loosen the fit while the toes expand, giving way to even more breathability and comfort. This shoe is truly built for long-distance running across mixed terrains while remaining comfortable, responsive, stable, and durable.
Traction
Constructed with On’s infamous Missiongrip™ technology, the Cloudultra outsole provides great traction through surfaces like mud, dirt, rocky terrains, and mixed trails. The multi-directional lugs do a great job of gripping without collecting too much dirt and rocks beneath the shoe. Some runners report that the shoe may not perform as well in wet conditions; traction may be reduced on wetter trails and especially going fast downhill.
Durability
Like other On shoes, the Cloudultra is made with advanced, durable materials allowing it to be a high-performance shoe across various terrains with minimal wear and tear. Reinforced with rubber overlays, laterally placed bumpers, and a tough outsole construction, runners report that even after long distances, the shoe remains durable with all of the lugs intact and minimally worn down.
Support
The Cloudultra delivers extreme support and maximum comfort on all sides of the foot across various mixed terrains. The Missiongrip™ outsole and CloudTec® cushioning give the foot full support and security while running, hiking, and exploring off-road. This shoe is truly prepared for whatever tricks the trail has in store.
Protection
From the upper to the outsole, the entire makeup of the Cloudultra uses high-quality materials like the Helion™ double-layer foam, CloudTec® system, and Speedboard technology that fully protects the feet inside and out. Runners praise the extra layer of protection especially while running on rocky trails and over tree roots. The fully gusseted tongue and unified heel collar also increase protection and security by keeping out rocks and other debris.
Breathability
The Cloudultra is extremely breathable with its two-layer upper mesh construction reinforced with lightweight TPU that keeps your feet warm during colder temperatures and cool during hotter climates. The new FlipRelease system is a nice touch that gives your feet extra room to breathe and expand while delivering a natural and better fit while running. Runners praise this shoe’s ability to remain breathable across various climates but especially its ability to keep the feet warm in cold and wet conditions.
Style
Don’t be fooled by all the technology that goes into the Cloudultra’s construction, making it a great, long-distance trail running shoe. It’s also extremely stylish with numerous patterns and color options which make it a great shoe to wear around town. While it’s a performance shoe, many people are also tempted to wear it as a lifestyle shoe. On excels at making versatile performance shoes that runners love to wear for casual walks around the neighborhood, and they practically go well with any outfit! Simply put, On doesn’t make ugly shoes.
Flexibility and Responsiveness
On is known for its Speedboard technology nestled in the midsole between the Helion™ superfoam, which acts as a springboard with soft landings and powerful take-offs propelling runners forward. While it aims to be extremely responsive, some runners report that the rigidity of the shoe reduces its flexibility in the beginning and may need a few runs to gain more flexibility in the footbed.
On Cloudultra Construction
Outsole
Like other On trail-running shoes, the Cloudultra features cutting-edge, Missiongrip™ technology that delivers great traction and extreme grip on tough surfaces like dirt and rocky trails. The structure of the multi-directional lugs also adds grip to lateral movements and creates more security across various terrains. The toe and midfoot are made of large, brick-like lugs while the rest are square lugs where the base material is notched. The outsole is also designed with a brand-new closed-channel construction that stops stones from catching and dirt from collecting in between the cloud pods.
Midsole
On aims to deliver the feeling of “running on clouds” with each of their creations, and their proprietary Helion™ superfoam and CloudTec® technology make this possible. The Helion™ foam, also called clouds, run across the midsole and absorbs impact both vertically and horizontally while flexing in all directions to adapt to the runner’s style. This double-layer superfoam, in addition to CloudTec®, provides the ultimate comfort for long-distance runs across mixed terrains.
Upper
The upper is constructed with a two-layer breathable mesh reinforced with lightweight TPU that wraps around from the toe to the heel giving a uniform and sleek look to the shoe while remaining functional. The sock-like upper with a fully gusseted tongue and unified heel collar also increases protection and security by keeping out rocks and other debris. The newly added FlipRelease system also helps to alleviate pressure in the midfoot and forefoot by allowing the foot to expand during runs with a simple flip of the switch.
Lacing System
Some runners dislike the thin laces on the Cloudultra while other runners absolutely love it, especially the ability to tuck the laces into the band at the top of the midfoot, which prevents them from flapping around and keeps the laces securely fastened. As mentioned, the additional FlipRelease system is a huge bonus that allows runners to give their toes more room to breathe during runs with just a simple switch. The FlipRelease is a thin, plastic switch that the laces run through right above the first eyelets. In the neutral position, the shoe will fit as tied, but once flipped, the laces slide into wider slots and automatically loosens the foot box.
Conclusion
The Cloudultra is a versatile trail running shoe designed for endurance runners, marathon runners, and ultra runners. While some runners report that performance is reduced on more technical trails, most runners praise this shoe’s ability to provide maximum protection, durability, responsiveness, and comfort across various mixed terrains, including extremely rocky trails. The best part is that the Cloudultra looks good both on and off the trails, so after a long workout, it can be an easy lifestyle shoe for a casual walk in the park.
